Early warning, without rounds past the traps
Those who notice tiger mosquitoes early can control them in a targeted, small-scale way. The Faunabit Tiger Mosquito Trap makes that possible: the trap attracts mosquitoes with water to lay eggs in, photographs what lands and automatically distinguishes mosquitoes of the genus Aedes, to which the tiger mosquito belongs, from other mosquitoes and insects. As soon as there is something to see, you know.
What it delivers
- Several locations monitored remotely, without physical checks
- An alert as soon as an Aedes mosquito is recognised, with the photo attached so that an expert can confirm the species
- Targeted control where it is needed, instead of broad campaigns
- Evidence for administrators, public health services and residents, with images and data
Developed for practice
The trap was developed as a proof of concept for the Dutch government and builds on a proven BIOMON trap. The recognition is trained on GBIF and mosquito-alert data and distinguishes three groups: the genus Aedes, other Culicidae and other insects. Recognition therefore works at group level; identification to species (such as Aedes albopictus) remains work for an expert, based on the photo.
