Insect monitoring for research and universities

Standardised, repeatable insect data at scale, developed with Naturalis, Radboud University and EIS.

More sampling points, longer series and one standardised method, without extra fieldwork. The DIOPSIS insect camera was developed with research institutes and is now used at more than 100 locations. Images and metadata are available through the portal for your own analyses.

Developed with the scientific community

The DIOPSIS insect camera is the result of a collaboration between EIS Kenniscentrum Insecten, Naturalis Biodiversity Center, Radboud University and COSMONiO. Work on a new insect monitoring system has been under way since early 2019. That scientific foundation makes the system particularly well suited to research.

Why it suits research

Research places high demands on data quality: measurements must be standardized, repeatable and comparable between sites and years. Because the DIOPSIS camera carries out every measurement in the same automated way, human variation in trapping and identification is eliminated. The image recognition is managed by Naturalis, and you record the metadata for your research through the web portal.

Scale and monitoring networks

Because a camera can be installed in a matter of minutes and runs autonomously on solar power, you can easily set up multiple monitoring points and build monitoring networks. This lets you collect standardized data over larger areas and longer periods than is feasible with manual sampling.

Working together

Faunabit is keen to work with researchers on monitoring design and application. The camera is available to buy or lease, for example for a clearly defined research project. Get in touch to discuss the options.
